Michael Schumacher is a former Formula 1 driver from Germany, widely regarded as arguably the greatest driver in the history of the sport, having won a record seven Drivers’ World Championship and is the holder of countless records in the sport.
Among the records he holds in Formula 1, Schumacher has won the most races in Formula 1 history with 91, the most number of championships, most number of fastest laps with 77 as well as pole positions with 68, most points scored in the Drivers’ Championship with 1,566 and finally, the most races won in a single season of Formula 1 with 13.
In 2002, which was seen as his best season in the sport, he broke the record of finishing in the top three in all races of the season and then went on to break the most consecutive finishes in the podium. The German legend began his career with go karts where he won several championships before going on to join Formula Three. He signed his first Formula 1 contract with Jordan and then moved to Benetton in 1991, and after he won two consecutive Drivers’ World Championship, he switched over to Ferrari in 1996, where he spent most of his career before retiring from the sport in 2006. After Felipe Massa was injured in 2009, he agreed to fill in with Ferrari but a neck injury prevented his comeback.
The following year, Michael Schumacher shocked the world when he signed for Mercedes for his comeback to the sport, going on to race for the team for two more seasons before he called time on his long career at the end of 2012.
